Transform lawns to backyard chickens & edible gardens: In a busy & highly consumeristic world, how and where to start can be the most challenging part of integrating sustainability into the urban home. But with a few simple changes to our own backyards and in our kitchens, we can slowly but surely build our self-resiliency & move towards a greener world. To simply enjoy fresh eggs & organic home-grown vegetables is a great pleasure that also supports the wider ecosystem. As permaculture influencer Bill Mollison states "The problems of the world seem exceedingly complicated while the solutions remain embarrassingly simple.

    Overview of Organisation

We are a totally off-grid Permaculture farm in Rosslyn, Yeppoon. We grow our own organic fruit, vegetables, bush tucka, beef, lamb, pork, poultry and eggs. We use dam water, rain water and naturally desalinated bore water. We provide a lot of education from day-care to university and tourists on regenerative agriculture, permaculture ethics of "Earth Care, People Care & Fair Share", off-grid living, community living and closed loop no waste systems.

Permaculture is based on permanent agricultural sustainable systems. We look to recycle everything we can. We work in harmony with Mother Nature to be part of nature not apart from nature. We put more back into our soil than what we take out. We create systems that improve and become more self sustaining with time.

We prevent erosion and toxic run off into our waterways and out on to the Reef with the use of swales, ground cover, leaky weirs and we do not use chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers. We produce chemical-free produce for our community, our restaurant Beaches and our farmers markets. We provide education to a large cross section as mentioned above. We provide 'People Care' by taking in suitable homeless people, people straight out of rehabilitation and people less fortunate than us who just need a leg up and opportunity in life.

We are passionate about what we do because we care about our dear Mother Earth, fellow humans and most importantly we take responsibility for providing a healthy happy life here on this planet for future generations to come.

Appreciation of wildlife and the natural environment

    Overview of Organisation

The Wildlife Preservation Society QLD Capricorn Branch and other local environment groups are all about Community education. We organise public events to encourage appreciation of wildlife and the natural environment, for example, talks by experts and field trips.  We produce displays for public events and provide volunteers to answer questions from interested people. Campaigns and submissions. We have supported campaigns to protect the Mt. Etna limestone bat caves, The Farnborough Wetlands, The Great Barrier Reef and to stop sand-mining in the Byfield-Shoalwater Bay area. We follow up on issues that we think are important to our aims through research, letter writing, and submissions.

We consult and liaise with Queensland Government Departments, The Livingstone Shire and Rockhampton Regional Councils, the Australian Army, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Central Queensland University, Fitzroy Basin Assoc., Queensland Transport, local primary producers, other environmental and cultural groups, and the media.

Hands-on conservation.  We support tree plantings, dune restorations, organic gardening, permaculture and landcare projects run by other groups on the Capricorn Coast whose activities fit with our aims.

    Natural Sequence Gardening

    Overview of Organisation

'Working with Nature' is what inspired Maia Landscapes.  Natural Sequence Gardens grew from living and learning regenerative agriculture on a beef property. A combination of Biodynamics, Syntropic Agroforestry and Natural Sequence Farming.

Working with the innate intelligence of a landscape means we can create functioning environments which will improve soil health, are water efficient whilst balancing soil hydrology, and suitable to you and the variables unique to your management capacity. Our innate intelligence is dynamically integrated with the landscape, how we work our land impacts both us and the land. To move through our environment with consideration for our welfare and the landscape and animals is to move effortlessly, building up all beings involved.

The more we do, the more we will have to do to upkeep what we have done, we will require increasing remedies to address the degradation of animals, humans and the land on which we live.

Maia, a goddess of Spring, guides my human and landscape regeneration, reminding us to do less, be more.

  • Overview of Organisation

Biodynamics Capricornia is a group of like minded people wanting to learn more about Biodynamics and the practical use of this regenerative method of gardening and farming.

Learning how to improve soil and environmental health, grow nutrient dense plants and crops and ultimately healthier animals and humans.

Our group is just over 12 months old and started on the back of a workshop Livingstone Shire council ran as part of the bushfire recovery program. Our group has grown beyond  all expectations with over 180 people on our data base.

We gather monthly sharing knowledge and information, making our own Biodynamic herbal preparations as we move towards  our own group self sufficiency, and creating a sense of community.
