National Tree Day a great opportunity to enhance our beautiful local environment

Back

It’s that time of year again where the community comes together to roll up their sleeves and take part in National Tree Day!

Taking place on Sunday 27 July, Council is inviting residents to the annual event that has grown into Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event.

Development and Environment Committee Co-Chair Councillor Pat Eastwood said National Tree Day helps to ensure the Livingstone Shire region continues to be a great place to live, while participants can also enjoy the benefits that come from spending time outdoors.

“This year's planting site will be located at Mulambin Beach, which extends the Rotary Club of Capricorn Coast nature walk and supports the work of Capricorn Coast Landcare Group on this foreshore area,” Cr Eastwood said.

“The planting will restore habitat for many special animals that rely on the vegetation found along our coastline.

“Over 28 million trees have been planted by Australian volunteers since 1996 as part of the program and we are excited to be supporting the goal of getting another million native plants in the ground throughout our nation this year.”

Councillor Eastwood added National Tree Day is always well-attended in Livingstone Shire and hopes this year’s event will be no different.

“It’s free for the whole family, so grab your hats, gloves, spades, water bottles, covered in shoes and sunscreen, and bring the kids down to enjoy a fun day out while giving back to our community,” Cr Eastwood said.

“These tree planting events may only take a few hours of your time, but your contribution will have a long lasting, positive impact on our local flora and fauna for years to come.”

Council is also proud to support the National Tree Day event taking place at the Capricorn Caves on Sunday 27 July from 10am – 12pm, led by Capricorn Conservation Council and Capricorn Caves, which was successful in receiving a grant as part of its Event Sponsorship Program.
