New Footpath to Boost Safety and Connectivity for Yeppoon State School Community

A safer, more accessible journey to school is now a reality for students, families, and residents near Yeppoon State School, thanks to a fully funded $215,500 upgrade under the Queensland Government’s School Transport Infrastructure Program (STIP).

The project delivered approximately 290 metres of new 2.0-metre-wide concrete footpath on the western side of the school, along with a raised pedestrian crossing and upgraded street lighting on Caroline Street. These works will fill a long-standing missing link in the local pedestrian network.

Mayor Adam Belot welcomed the investment, saying the project responds to years of community feedback and meets an important need.

“This is a fantastic outcome for Yeppoon State School and the surrounding neighbourhood,” Mayor Belot said.

“Creating safe, walkable routes for students and families is a priority for our community, and this project will make a real difference.”

Member for Keppel Nigel Hutton said the investment in improved safety for Yeppoon State school and general communities is money well spent.

“Partnerships such as this one benefit our entire community and offer a legacy to be used by generations to come,” Mr Hutton said.

"Safety, accessibility and connectivity are always a high priority to ensure our students, teachers, caregivers and residents can enjoy ease of mobility around our local schools."

Infrastructure Committee Co-Chair Rhodes Watson said that while the eastern side of Yeppoon State School has long enjoyed safe footpath access, the western side—particularly Norton Street and Ranger Street—has remained without a formal connection, often forcing students to walk along uneven ground or on the roadway.

“By closing this critical gap, the new infrastructure will improve pedestrian safety, encourage active transport like walking and cycling, and provide a safer, more inclusive environment for the entire school community,” Cr Watson said.

The project is proudly 100% funded by the State Government under the School Transport Infrastructure Program, in partnership with local government to enhance safety and access around Queensland schools.
