Celebrating Our Volunteers: The Heart of Livingstone Shire!
Livingstone Shire Council is proud to celebrate National Volunteer Week 2025 (19–25 May) and express heartfelt appreciation to the hundreds of dedicated volunteers who give their time, skills, and compassion to support our community week in and week out.
This year’s theme, "Connecting Communities", highlights the powerful role volunteering plays in bringing people together and building a stronger, more inclusive society.
Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Chair Councillor Lance Warcon acknowledged the vital role volunteers play.
“Across Livingstone Shire, volunteers are the backbone of what makes our region such a wonderful place to live, work, and play,” Cr Warcon said.
“Each week, 125 dedicated volunteers support programs led by Livingstone Shire Council, making a significant difference to the lives of many.
“Some of our volunteer groups include the Library, Friends of the Beach and Lammermoor Native Gardens, Nursery Natives, the Community Crew, and those volunteering within shared community spaces.
“Their tireless efforts not only support critical services but also create lasting relationships, strengthen communities, and foster a sense of belonging.”
For the past five years, Shared Spaces volunteer Bill Strike has quietly transformed the western section of Taranganba’s Remora Park into a thriving, well-loved space for the community.
“This spot has become something really special,” Bill said.
“It started with a few trees, and now it’s a place where kids come to play, people walk their dogs, and the community comes together.”
With the support of Council’s free mulch program, Bill works tirelessly to suppress weeds and keep the garden beds healthy. He also mows the grass regularly through the warmer months, ensuring the area remains safe and inviting for families.
A number of Rainbow Gums, planted by the community in remembrance of loved ones, are starting to flourish at the site — living tributes that continue to grow thanks to Bill’s ongoing care.
“There’s a sense of peace here,” Bill said. “You see the Rainbow Gums and Rain trees, you hear the birds, and sometimes you’re lucky enough to spot the Tawny Frogmouths nesting. I’ve even got photos of the chicks hatching and leaving the nest — it’s magical.”
His work hasn’t gone unnoticed. What was once an overgrown patch is now a flat, open space where children kick a ball, dogs chase sticks, and nature is respected and nurtured.
“I just like giving back, and there’s a real sense of pride as to what’s been achieved here,” he said.
“Volunteering makes me feel connected to this place and the people in it. It doesn’t take much to make a difference.”
Councillor Warcon agreed that volunteers are the heart and soul of a community.
“Their efforts touch so many aspects of our daily lives, and their impact is truly immeasurable,” Cr Warcon said.
“Council is incredibly grateful for the contribution of every volunteer across our Shire — they inspire us all and help make Livingstone the thriving and connected community it is today.”
Volunteering not only benefits the community but also enriches the lives of volunteers through connection, purpose, and personal growth.
If you’ve ever considered giving back, now is the perfect time. Volunteering just a few hours a week or fortnight can offer meaningful experiences, new skills, and lifelong friendships.
