A new Community Resource Recovery Centre (CRRC) for sorting reusable, recyclable and recoverable materials is now open to the public at Yeppoon Landfill.

Livingstone Shire Mayor Andy Ireland and Councillor Andrea Friend officially opened the new centre today.

The $3 million project was jointly funded by Livingstone Shire Council and the Queensland Government, which committed $625,000 through its Resource Recovery Industry Development Program, with council providing the balance.

Mayor Andy Ireland welcomed the completion of construction by local contractor Paynters Pty Ltd.

“Council estimates that it will need to spend $30 million within the next 10 years to cap the existing landfill cells and build additional cells,” Mayor Ireland said.

“This multi-purpose facility will help divert close to 3000 tonnes of waste from Yeppoon Landfill each year, extending the lifetime of the current landfill cell by two years allowing council to defer spending $8-9 million in the short term.

“The provision of this new Community Resource Recovery Centre is a key part of council’s Management of Resource Recovery and Waste Strategy that aims to position the Livingstone community on a path towards a zero-waste future.

“We are very grateful for the Queensland Government’s contribution to this necessary project which provides residents with a modern and purpose-built facility.”

Member for Keppel and Assistant Education Minister Brittany Lauga said the Palaszczuk Government was investing in the region to create good local jobs.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to investing in regional Queensland, and we’re seeing the benefits right here in Yeppoon,” Ms Lauga said.

“This investment is ensuring important industry remains in our community, along with the jobs it provides.

“Our investment created three good jobs for locals right here in Yeppoon, adding to the thousands that we’re creating through the region.”

Councillor Andrea Friend, Portfolio holder Water, Waste Management and the Environment, said the project includes a repurposed check-in shed, relocated and additional commercial weighbridges, regulated waste storage, and a community resource recovery shed connecting to the existing transfer station road system.

“The new layout of the landfill will facilitate smoother operation of the site and improve traffic safety by reducing queueing and separating domestic and commercial visitors,” Cr Friend said.

“Upon entering the landfill, domestic customers will turn right to the check-in shed where the attendant will assess your load and accept payment.

“Painted lines on the road and signage will help you find your way to the right place to unload your recyclables and general waste with staff on hand to advise where items should be placed.

“The 480 square metre roofed Resource Recovery Centre is equipped with multiple sorting bins for different recyclables and twin access lanes should ensure rapid transfer for well sorted loads.”

You can reduce your waste disposal costs by recycling these things at the Yeppoon Community Resource Recovery Centre:

  • Comingled Recyclables
  • Cardboard
  • Oil
  • Electronic waste (E-waste)
  • Furniture
  • Tyres
  • Batteries including vehicle batteries
  • Empty gas bottles
  • Metal waste (larger loads can still be deposited at the metal pile)

Remember to sort your load before you leave home into what can be recycled and what needs to be landfilled – it will help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and save you money!
