The $187 million Surf Lakes tourist attraction proposed for Livingstone Shire has reached a major milestone, with Council today giving approval for the Surf Lake Local Plan and approval of Stage 1.

At the general meeting, Council voted to support plans for a tourist attraction, accommodation, and renewable energy facility at the Surf Lakes site, on Yeppoon Road, west of Yeppoon.

Stage 1 plans include a Tourist attraction incorporating a surf lake and associated facilities, skate park, renewable energy facility, tourist park and short term accommodation with cabins and camping sites.

Mayor Andy Ireland said the development would be a huge drawcard for locals, interstate, and international visitors.

“The Surf Lakes project has continually been unfolding and developing in recent years and today’s meeting marks a major step forward in bringing this fantastic tourism drawcard to life,” Mayor Ireland said.

“Council understands the hugely positive impact this development would have on the Livingstone Shire region, placing us on the national and international map for world-class tourism facilities, while also providing a massive economic benefit with job creation during construction and once in operation.

“Councillors and officers were satisfied with the information provided by the company, which covers everything from the masterplan, traffic, noise, and environmental assessments, as well as Cultural Heritage Assessment and Native Title Duty of Care.”

Portfolio holder of Planning and Strategic Infrastructure,  Councillor Nigel Hutton, praised the next phase in this staged development.

“From a prototype to a proposed full scale integrated tourist development, this will provide jobs for generations of residents and make a unique tourism offering available here on the Capricorn Coast, and celebrated on the world stage,” Cr Hutton said.

“Council recognises the tenacity and resilience of the proponent, who studied here at Yeppoon State High School and is a great example of a local lad made good.

“With support from Council, community and investors, our community is strengthened, and this development will play an important role in the coming decade of economic growth on the Capricorn Coast.”

Further approvals will be required from Council as the development progresses, which are expected in due course.
