Community Invited to Shape Oxford Road Waterway Rehabilitation
Livingstone Shire Council is inviting the community to have their say as consultation opens for the upcoming Oxford Road Water Quality and Habitat Project in Yeppoon.
The project aims to rehabilitate existing native vegetation and implement sustainable, nature-based solutions to land management to prevent soil erosion and sedimentation.
This initiative will enhance water quality downstream, enrich wildlife habitats, and increase carbon storage in the urban landscape, ultimately supporting healthy waterways and a thriving community.
Deputy Mayor and Development and Environment Committee Co-Chair Pat Eastwood emphasized that the project will be achieved by working closely with the local community, understanding their needs, and acknowledging their unique connection to the area.
"By involving residents in the co-design process, we hope to build long-term stewardship of the site and ensure that the rehabilitated waterway remains a sustainable, living asset for generations to come," Councillor Eastwood said.
The project will focus on rehabilitating existing stormwater facilities to stop soil erosion and sedimentation, creating sustainable nature-based solutions to land management, improving water quality downstream, enhancing wildlife habitats, and increasing carbon storage in the urban landscape.
Councillor Eastwood highlighted that enhancing spaces like the catchment at Oxford Road builds community appreciation and support for the natural features that keep our environment healthy.
"Protecting the catchments of our local waterways protects the Great Barrier Reef," Councillor Eastwood said.
Livingstone Shire Council is proud to be a Reef Guardian Council—an initiative of the Reef Authority—delivering real outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef.
Funding for the Oxford Road Water Quality and Habitat Project has been provided to Livingstone Shire Council from the Australian Government to enable Reef Guardian Councils to deliver projects and activities identified in their Reef Action Plans.
