Livingstone Shire Council is pleased to announce that it has secured additional funding to continue its efforts in combating illegal dumping within the Shire.

The Queensland Government's commitment to supporting local councils across the state in addressing this critical issue is welcomed, with a $2.7 million allocation to aid in the fight against illegal dumping.

The allocation is an extension of funding Council received last year following a successful application with the Local Government Illegal Dumping Partnerships Program.

Environment Minister Leanne Linard said “The Miles Government is strongly committed to protecting Queensland’s iconic natural environment, and that means keeping it free of litter and properly managing waste being generated.”

Principal Council Ranger Roy Lewandowski said “The boost in funding provided by the Queensland Government is instrumental in our ongoing efforts to tackle illegal dumping effectively. It enables us to continue the employment of our dedicated illegal dumping compliance officer and implement strategic measures to tackle this issue head-on.”

Local Government Association of Queensland Chief Executive Officer Alison Smith said “Councils play a critical role in helping their communities reduce waste and environmental impacts but councils and communities can’t afford to go it alone, so State Government funding programs like these are crucial if we are to continue to build liveability for all Queenslanders.”

Livingstone Shire Council has been proactive in its approach to combatting illegal dumping, with 20 cameras strategically installed across known dumping hotspots.

Over the past year, Council has recorded a total of 215 illegal dumping incidents, amounting to approximately 248,027 litres of waste. In response to these incidents, 30 warnings and 36 infringements were issued.

Green waste is commonly found illegally dumped and while some may perceive dumping green waste as harmless, it poses significant threats to Queensland's primary industries, environment, and public health. Illegal dumping of green waste, organic waste, and soils can introduce pest plants and animals, contaminate waterways, and escalate bushfire risks.

The Council is in the process of erecting green waste signage to raise awareness among the community about the impacts of illegal dumping and the associated penalties.

Livingstone Shire Council urges residents to dispose of waste responsibly and report any instances of illegal dumping promptly. Residents can report illegal dumping to Council via the Online Services portal or by contacting 1300 790 919. Alternatively, reports can be made to the State Government online at www.qld.gov.au or by contacting 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

The council reminds the community that fines for illegal dumping are substantial, with individuals facing a fine of more than $2,000 and $6,500 for corporations.

Livingstone Shire Council extends its gratitude to the Queensland Government for its continued partnership and commitment to tackling illegal dumping.
