Two rural bridges to be replaced in Livingstone Shire

Two rural timber bridges will soon be replaced with concrete bridges at Canal Creek thanks to funding from both the Australian Government and Livingstone Shire Council.

The existing single lane bridges on Doonside and Werribee Road will be replaced to improve safety, heavy vehicle access and reduce maintenance.

The Werribee Creek Bridge will be replaced first with work scheduled to begin in February for two months, weather permitting.

The Doonside Bridge, which has already been closed due to safety concerns, is due to be replaced in April, with the works also set to run for two months.

The combined cost is $1.58m and is 50/50 jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Bridges Renewal Program and by the Livingstone Shire Council.

Portfolio holder of Transport (Roads, Drainage, Pathways), Councillor Glenda Mather said it’s great to see both levels of government working together to improve infrastructure in the shire.

“The timber bridges are both dilapidated and need to be replaced as a matter of priority,” Councillor Mather said.

“The new concrete bridges will see an increase of the mass limit to 47 tonne and reduce future maintenance requirements.

“Council would like to thank the Australian Government for contributing equal funding towards these important projects for our community.

“We also appreciate the community’s patience while these works are carried out."
