Donations support ongoing work of local animal foster agencies

A donation of $15,000 has been gifted across three local animal foster agencies in Livingstone, as part of Council’s ongoing funding support towards the important cause.

Councillor Andrea Friend, Portfolio holder of Water, Waste Management and the Environment, presented the cheques of $5,000 each to Capricorn Animal Aid, RSPCA and Four Paws Adoption and Education Inc. today, for the tireless work they do to foster and rehome pets across the region.

“Council is extremely proud to deliver these funds to these wonderful agencies who provide invaluable care and support for so many animals and families in our community day in, day out,” Cr Friend said.

“While these groups do amazing work year-round, this is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership, and keeping our beloved furry four-legged friends safe and healthy.

“All pet owners should ensure their pets are desexed, wormed, vaccinated, and microchipped.

“If you do decide you have room for a pet in your life and can provide it with the care and attention it deserves, then consider adopting from a local rehoming organisation first. That way you are not only giving an animal a second chance but they can match you with the perfect pet for your family.

“These volunteer agencies work closely with Council’s Local Laws team and are vital to preventing pets from being impounded and finding them loving new “furever” homes.”

President of Capricorn Animal Aid, Debbie Orr, said the volunteer group have assisted in rescuing and rehoming over 150 dogs and 200 cats this year. These animals have been saved due to close working relationships with Livingstone, Biloela and Rockhampton Councils.

“Currently, we have 30 puppies in care so this donation will solely go towards veterinary care for their vaccinations, desexing, and microchipping so they can be rehomed as soon as possible,” Debbie said.

“The biggest issue agencies face is desexing, this is such an import part of responsible pet ownership. Capricorn Animal Aid provides a subsidy to pensioners and healthcare cardholders to assist with desexing their cat or dog, both male and female. Application forms and full details are available on the CAA website.

“The need for heartworm prevention is also common in a lot of dogs we rescue, and this condition is easily treated with vaccination.

“We are supremely grateful for this financial contribution from Council, which goes a long way to helping many local pets find a new home.”
