Latest Armchair Travel Session to feature Taiwan: A traveller’s delight!

Fabulous food, cosmopolitan cities, friendly people, fascinating history and culture, as well as gorgeous forests and spectacular seascapes – Taiwan is a traveller's delight!

Seasoned traveller and Yeppoon local Debra Burn is an enthusiastic traveller and in the last decade has visited Argentina and Brazil, Japan (five times), Xian, Fujian and Hong Kong, France, Germany, Switzerland and Russia, and Bali and Lombok, as well as many and various places around Western Australia and Tasmania.

An obvious fan of Japan, it might have been natural for Deb to choose that country as her subject, however Japan is a reasonably well known travel destination already.

“I wanted to share a lesser known but absolutely wonderful destination – in fact, since visiting in 2018 I have turned into some kind of one-woman Taiwan Promotion Bureau!" Debra said.

The experienced traveller will share some of the highlights during her time in Taiwan at this month’s upcoming Armchair Travel session on 21 August at Yeppoon Town Hall.

A former manager of Livingstone Libraries from 1988 to 2011, Debra has returned to Yeppoon to retire after "enjoying a fabulous 10 year working holiday" in Perth.

“As a lifetime librarian, I love going to places where I’ve either read a book or seen a movie about it. There is nothing like reading about places like Red Square in Moscow or Mt Fuji in Japan after having been there. I get quite a literary thrill from it,” Debra said.

“I really enjoy finding something a little unusual that’s very local in that place or discovering a place off the beaten track that amazes you, a place you wouldn’t expect to find.”

While Taiwan was an unfamiliar destination for Debra, it had all of the elements to make the trip an unforgettable experience.

“It’s got the magnificent capital of Taipei but when you venture further out of the city it has the most amazing landscapes, particularly the east coast, which is a mountainous coastline that drops into an azure blue sea,” Debra explained.

“You’ve got surfing and swimming on the coast and then beautiful tea plantations once you go inland, so many hiking trails in the mountains, which are more than 3,000 metres high.

“The people are very friendly, polite, and welcoming, the food is incredible and it’s a very modern and somewhat westernised place. I’m not sure what people think of when they imagine Taiwan but it’s certainly deserving of tourism.”

Looking forward to presenting at her Armchair Travel session, Debra said she would talk briefly about Taiwan’s history before delving into some of the incredible and eye-opening experiences she had there.

Deb is looking forward to visiting Taiwan again as soon as travel restrictions are lifted.
