Livingstone Shire Council is pleased to announce the completion of the Werribee Road Bridge renewal at Canal Creek, delivering a safer, stronger, and more reliable crossing for the rural community.

The project replaced an ageing timber bridge with a reinforced concrete structure designed to last more than 50 years. The upgrade increases the bridge’s capacity from 12 tonnes to 47 tonnes, enabling the safe passage of heavy cattle trucks and large agricultural machinery.

Infrastructure Portfolio Co-Lead Glenda Mather said the new bridge will play an important role in supporting the local agricultural economy.

“This investment ensures our rural producers can move cattle, crops, and supplies more efficiently and safely, while also reducing costly detours and delays,” Cr Mather said.

“The bridge also significantly improves flood resilience for the area. Intermittent rainfall during construction had previously left residents and rural operations land-locked for days, and this new structure ensures safer, more reliable access even during flood events.”

“We are so pleased that this project will deliver long-term benefits for local families, businesses, and future generations.”

The project also demonstrates Council’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure delivery. The use of durable materials and precast elements reduces long-term maintenance needs, while optimised transport logistics during construction helped to lower carbon emissions.

The Werribee Road Bridge renewal was jointly funded by Livingstone Shire Council and the Australian Government, with the Australian Government contributing 50% ($334,602) under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.

Council thanks the local community for their patience during construction and looks forward to the improved safety and efficiency the bridge will provide for many years to come.
