First Peoples

Council acknowledges and pays respect to the Darumbal, Woppaburra and Barada Kalbalbara Yetimarala people as Traditional Custodians of the land and sea within Livingstone and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. Livingstone Shire Council pays respect to Elders past, present, and emerging.

Across Livingstone Shire, the Traditional Owners are the Darumbal People (land and sea), the Woppaburra people (sea and islands) and the Barada Kalbalbara Yetimarala people.

Darumbal are recognised Native Title holders across the land in Livingstone and a TUMRA across sea country. The Woppaburra people are recognised Native Title holders across Woppa (Great Keppel Island) and Konomie (North Keppel Island) and a TUMRA across sea country surrounding the islands. The Barada Kalbalbara Yetimarala people are recognised as traditional custodians of and have a pending Native Title claim application across country in the north-west of Livingstone Shire (near Ogmore).

Livingstone Shire Council is an active participant in NAIDOC Week celebrations and events each year. Council is extremely proud to help facilitate and support each year’s walk and flag-raising ceremony. Livingstone Shire Council leaves the Indigenous Australian flag flying permanently on the Yeppoon foreshore.
