Stevenson Park to Remain a Cherished Community Green Space
Published on 09 July 2026
Livingstone Shire Council has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Stevenson Park as one of the Capricorn Coast's most treasured community green spaces, assuring residents the historic park will continue to serve future generations.
Mayor Adam Belot said recent discussion surrounding Council's Blueprint Livingstone Community and Town Activation project had sparked some speculation about the future of the park, prompting Council to provide clear reassurance to the community.
"Let me be absolutely clear, Stevenson Park is here to stay," Mayor Belot said.
"For almost a century, Stevenson Park has been at the heart of our community. It has hosted generations of families, major events, recreation, and celebrations, and it will continue to do so well into the future."
Mayor Belot said the land was generously gifted to Council by the Stevenson family in 1929 with the vision that it would remain a place for the community to gather, connect and enjoy.
"We recognise and respect the incredible legacy left by the Stevenson family. Their gift has benefited countless generations, and Council remains committed to honouring that vision."
"There has never been any intention for Stevenson Park to become anything other than the valued community green space it has always been."
Mayor Belot said while Council continues planning for the region's future through the Blueprint Livingstone Community and Town Activation project, Stevenson Park is not being considered for any redevelopment.
"A future civic precinct, including a new civic centre and library, is being planned within Yeppoon's town centre, with a range of potential locations for community services and shared community spaces currently being investigated."
"As part of that broader strategic planning, Council is reviewing how some of its existing property assets could be better utilised to support future housing, tourism, commercial investment and increased town centre activity."
Mayor Belot said it was important for Council to think ahead as the region continued to grow, while also protecting the places that define the community.
"Good planning is about balancing growth with preservation. It means identifying opportunities while safeguarding the spaces our community values most.
"Stevenson Park is one of Livingstone Shire's most loved public spaces. It is an irreplaceable community asset that will continue to play a vital role in our region's social, recreational and community life for generations to come."
