Livingstone Shire Council is inviting residents and visitors to gather at St Christopher’s Chapel, Nerimbera, on Sunday, 5 July 2026, for the annual Service of Remembrance commemorating the enduring friendship between Central Queensland and United States forces during World War II.

This years’ service marks 83 years since the construction of the historic chapel, which remains one of the region’s most treasured wartime landmarks.

Built in 1943 by members of the United States Army’s 542nd Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment using locally sourced stone and bush timber, St Christopher’s Chapel served as a place of reflection and comfort for thousands of American servicemen stationed in the Rockhampton region during the war.

Mayor Adam Belot said the annual service, which traditionally falls on the Sunday closest to US Independence Day, provides an important opportunity to honour those who served while recognising the unique connection forged between local communities and American troops.

“Eighty-three years after its construction, St Christopher’s Chapel continues to stand as a remarkable symbol of friendship, resilience and shared history,” Mayor Belot said.

“The chapel tells the story of a pivotal period in our region’s past, when Central Queensland played an important role in supporting Allied operations in the Pacific and welcomed tens of thousands of American servicemen to our community.

“This Service of Remembrance allows us to reflect on the sacrifices made during World War II and acknowledge the bonds formed between our nations—relationships built in challenging circumstances that continue to be valued today.”

More than 70,000 American troops were stationed in the Rockhampton area between mid-1942 and early 1944, with Camp Nerimbera serving as a key military installation.

Located within the camp, St Christopher’s Chapel became a non-denominational sanctuary where soldiers could seek peace and spiritual support during a time of uncertainty.

Mayor Belot said the continued popularity of the annual service demonstrates the community’s commitment to preserving and sharing this important chapter of local history.

“Each year, many of the region’s residents come together to honour the legacy of those who served and to ensure their stories continue to be remembered,” he said.

“As custodians of this historic site, Council is proud to preserve St Christopher’s Chapel for future generations and provide opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with its remarkable history.

“We encourage everyone to join us for this years’ service as we pay tribute to those who served and celebrate the enduring legacy of this special place.”

The 2026 Service of Remembrance will be held at 2pm on Sunday, 5 July 2026, at St Christopher’s Chapel, Nerimbera.

All members of the community are welcome to attend.
