Fostering a harmonious co-existence between people, pets and places is at the heart of the Livingstone Shire Council Domestic Animal Management Plan endorsed by Council this week.

Mayor Belot said the plan has been revised in line with State Government legislation as well as feedback from the community and stakeholders.

“Effective animal management is essential to building a community where people, pets and places thrive together,” Mayor Belot said.

“As our community continues to grow and evolve, so must our approach to the management of cats and dogs to reflect a renewed vision for responsible pet ownership and shared community spaces.”

This Plan sets the direction for the next five years focusing on strengthening education, promoting animal wellbeing, protecting our natural environment, and creating inclusive spaces that balance the needs of pet owners and non-pet owners alike.

Feedback from the community highlighted the importance of:

  • Clear and accessible information about local regulations
  • Safe and well-managed public spaces
  • Respectful interactions between pet owners and non-pet owners
  • Responsible disposal of dog waste
  • Minimising the impact of roaming animals on wildlife

According to Development and Environment Portfolio Co-Lead Cr Pat Eastwood, the community has been clear in their feedback, and this has shaped our three key themes – an educated and informed community, healthy and well cared for pets, and safe, inclusive and sustainable places.

“Over the coming months, Council Rangers will be promoting the plan through education and awareness at events supported by information available via Councils website,” Cr Eastwood said.

“By strengthening education, promoting animal wellbeing and protecting our natural environment, we can create a community where people, pets and inclusive places work together to create a community we are proud of.”
