Livingstone Shire Council is pleased to share that recent respectful and constructive dialogue with the property owner adjacent to Zilzie Beach has signalled a renewed opportunity to explore solutions for community access to this iconic coastal area.

Following correspondence from Mayor Adam Belot to the landholder, Council has received positive communications reflecting a shared interest in working collaboratively to find a mutually beneficial way forward.

Mayor Belot said the encouraging tone of the discussions marks an important milestone for the community.

“Council has been steadfast in its commitment to advocating for public access to Zilzie Beach, while ensuring that any solutions respect the property owner’s rights and interests,” Mayor Belot said.

“While there had been a genuine intention to meet personally with the property owner in Shanghai earlier this year, that visit was unfortunately cancelled due to the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

“Despite this, we have remained committed to building rapport and continuing open communication in pursuit of a positive outcome for the community and the landholder.”

Development and Environment Committee Co-Chair, Deputy Mayor Pat Eastwood, emphasised the importance of ensuring beach access for both residents and visitors, acknowledging that past development decisions have limited this in certain areas.

“Over the years, we’ve seen considerable development along this part of our coastline, but unfortunately, beach access wasn’t always given the priority it deserved. This is likely due to planning oversights made decades ago.”

“People rightly expect to access the beach in these developed areas, just as they can in places like Lammermoor, Cooee Bay, and other parts of our coastline.

“It’s important that we now address these legacy issues and work towards providing fair and equitable access for everyone.”

Although formal access arrangements are yet to be determined, both Council and the property owner have expressed a willingness to maintain cooperative dialogue aimed at identifying practical solutions.

“This is a significant and positive step forward, and Council is committed to keeping the community updated as these conversations progress,” Mayor Belot added.

“Zilzie Beach holds a special place in the hearts of many residents and while there’s still work to be done, these early discussions provide genuine hope for a respectful and balanced outcome.”

Council appreciates the patience and support of the community as it continues efforts to secure public access in a way that is mindful of all parties involved.
