New Sporting Infrastructure Boosts Active Living in Glenlee

The installation of a basketball hoop quarter court at Glenlee Park is set to provide greater opportunities for outdoor activity and community connection, recently delivered in a joint funding initiative from Council and the Queensland Government.
Located on Emmerson Drive, the Glenlee facility is already proving a welcome addition for local families and young people, encouraging active lifestyles and informal sport in a relaxed, rural setting.
Mayor Adam Belot said Council was proud to continue investing in the northern part of the Shire, ensuring residents have access to quality amenities close to home.
“Council values the contributions of our northern communities and is committed to enhancing the lifestyle that makes these areas so special,” Mayor Belot said.
“We are always looking for opportunities to improve local amenities and recreational infrastructure, and this new court at Glenlee is a great example of how we can support healthy, active living while strengthening community connections.”
The Glenlee project was proudly funded by the Queensland Government through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, with $31,500 secured to assist delivery of this project and other recreational upgrades across the region. Council also contributed $4,932 to complete the Glenlee installation.
Mayor Belot acknowledged the Queensland Government for its important investment in community infrastructure.
“We thank the Queensland Government for its support through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, which plays a vital role in helping councils deliver projects that directly benefit local communities,” he said.
Member for Mirani Glen Kelly said the new facility is a fantastic outcome for the Glenlee community and reflects the importance of investing in grassroots recreation.
“This is a great example of how targeted funding can deliver real benefits for regional communities,” Mr Kelly said.
“I’m pleased to see the Queensland Government supporting projects that enhance local lifestyles and create more opportunities for families and young people to enjoy their community.”
Recreation and Culture Portfolio Co-Lead Councillor Lance Warcon said accessible outdoor sporting spaces are essential for fostering community wellbeing—particularly for young people.
“Facilities like the Glenlee basketball court provide a safe and welcoming space for young people to come together, be active, and build social connections,” Cr Warcon said.
“Outdoor sporting infrastructure not only supports physical health, but also contributes to mental wellbeing and a strong sense of community, which is incredibly important in our regional areas.
“Residents are encouraged to visit Glenlee Park and make use of the new facility, along with the range of other amenities available, including the shaded playground, oval, cricket nets, tennis court, picnic tables and BBQ area, and beginner BMX track.”
The new court delivers on priorities identified in the 2023 Livingstone Sporting Needs Analysis, which highlighted the importance of increasing opportunities for informal sport and recreation across the region.
Council also recently completed a similar installation at Kingston Park in Barmaryee, further strengthening its commitment to accessible, community-focused recreational spaces across Livingstone Shire.
