Livingstone Shire Council, in partnership with the Queensland Government, has delivered new bicycle parking infrastructure at high-use locations across the region to encourage cycling and improve community safety.

Recreation and Culture Committee Co-Lead Councillor Lance Warcon said the project makes it easier and safer for residents and visitors to choose cycling as an everyday transport option.

“Our community told us that limited bike parking was a barrier to cycling and that bikes and scooters were often left across footpaths, creating safety issues for pedestrians, prams, and mobility aids,” Cr Warcon said.

“By delivering more racks and better signage at key sites across the shire, Council is helping to remove those barriers, reduce obstructions, and encourage more people to embrace active transport.”

The project improves visibility and availability of bike parking across the Principal Cycle Network (PCN), reduces safety hazards on shared paths, and supports Council’s commitment to creating a more connected and accessible community.

Member for Keppel Nigel Hutton said the Crisafulli Government, through the Cycle Network Local Government Grants program, invested $19,180 to support the delivery of bicycle parking with Livingstone Shire Council.

“This investment reflects the Crisafulli Government’s commitment to supporting regional communities to thrive through improved infrastructure and safer, more accessible transport options,” Mr Hutton said.

“The Keppel electorate is a beautiful place to live and visit, and this important infrastructure is another way for locals and visitors alike to enjoy this beautiful part of Queensland.

“These local government grant programs complement our investment in planning and constructing bike riding facilities on the state-controlled transport network.

“Supporting councils to deliver high quality facilities on their local transport network will help ensure walking and bike riding routes in Queensland communities are connected, cohesive and provide a safe and comfortable experience that will encourage more people to travel actively.”
