Livingstone Shire Council is proud to announce the completion and commissioning of the upgraded Emu Park Sewage Treatment Plant, a vital infrastructure project that will support the region’s growth for the next 10 to 15 years.

The $6.6 million upgrade significantly boosts the plant’s capacity, improves the quality of treated effluent, and ensures Council continues to meet stringent environmental and regulatory requirements.

Infrastructure Committee Co-Chair, Councillor Glenda Mather said the modernised facility is a critical investment in the community’s future.

“This project reflects Council’s strong commitment to delivering sustainable, high-quality infrastructure that supports our growing population,” Cr Mather said.

“The upgraded Emu Park Sewage Treatment Plant gives us confidence that we can meet community needs well into the next decade, while maintaining the high environmental standards our residents expect”.

Member for Keppel Nigel Hutton said the upgraded infrastructure would reap benefits for generations to come.

“We are delivering the fresh start Queenslander’s deserve, and strengthening our state’s regional infrastructure and services,” Mr Hutton said.

“The Crisafulli Government are backing councils, and working with them to deliver key funding so they can get on with the job of delivering for Queenslanders.”

The project involved the construction of two new Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) tanks, installation of new aeration blowers and diffusers, a new chemical dosing system, and an advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system.

Councillor Mather said the investment not only increases capacity but enhances Council’s operational efficiency and environmental performance.

“The new infrastructure gives Council greater control over key biological, chemical, and dewatering processes, and ensures we’re well-placed to cater for future development across the Emu Park area,” Cr Mather said.

“Importantly, the upgraded system supports the continued use of recycled water on nearby sporting fields and the local golf course, which is a great outcome for our community and a smart way to manage our water resources”.

Principal contractor Liquitek Pty Ltd was commended for their professionalism and commitment throughout the delivery of the project which was completed to a high standard.

The project was jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government, which contributed $4 million through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program.

“Without this substantial contribution from the State, it would be beyond our Council to fund the expansion, without causing hardship for our ratepayers” Cr Mather explained.

Member for Keppel Nigel Hutton welcomed the completion of the new sewage treatment plant in Emu Park.

“Emu Park is experiencing rapid growth and through this investment, we’ve ensured Emu Park is supported to grow sustainably for the next decade”.

“This project has been a great example of local and state governments working together to deliver maximum benefit for the community”.

The Emu Park Sewage Treatment Plant forms part of Council’s broader strategy to invest in critical infrastructure that improves liveability and supports the long-term sustainability of the Livingstone region.
