Livingstone Shire LDMG Moves to Alert Stage
Published on 11 January 2026
The Livingstone Shire Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has this afternoon moved to Alert Stage in response to the impacts of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji and ongoing severe weather forecast for Central Queensland.
The decision follows updated advice from the Bureau of Meteorology indicating continued risks of damaging winds, heavy rainfall, dangerous flash flooding and potential riverine flooding across coastal and inland catchments in the coming days.
Mayor and LDMG Chair Adam Belot said Council and local response agencies were taking proactive steps to ensure community readiness.
“While Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji has weakened, the associated rain event is expected to continue through Monday and Tuesday, with the potential for significant rainfall and flooding across parts of the region,” Mayor Belot said.
“As a precautionary measure, Council is arranging for sand stockpiles to be made available to the community at the following locations:
- Emu Park SES facility, 53 Hunter Street Emu Park – Walk in only, park along Hunter Street.
- Cordingley Street Basketball court, 35 Cordingley street Yeppoon
- The Station Carpark, Normanby street access Yeppoon
A limited number of sandbags will be available at these locations; however, residents are strongly encouraged to bring their own bags and shovels.
Residents are encouraged to prepare their properties, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, and to remain alert to changing conditions.
“Now is the time for residents to check their emergency plans, secure loose items, and stay informed,” Mayor Belot said.
“We are also asking parents to be vigilant about their children swimming in unpredictable waterways, which may be enticing for kids at this time – so please be mindful of where your children are playing during this rain event.”
The Bureau of Meteorology has advised that minor to major flooding is possible in coastal and inland catchments between Ayr and Hervey Bay, including parts of the Fitzroy Basin. Severe Weather Warnings and Flood Watches remain current.
The Livingstone Shire LDMG will continue to monitor conditions closely and will escalate arrangements if required.
Community members are urged to:
- Monitor official warnings from the Bureau of Meteorology
- Avoid driving through floodwaters
- Follow advice from emergency services
- Stay up to date via Council’s Disaster Dashboard https://disaster.livingstone.qld.gov.au/
