Livingstone Shire Council has formally thanked Greg Abbotts for his outstanding service as Local Disaster Coordinator, acknowledging his leadership, professionalism, and commitment to community safety over more than three years in the role.

Mayor Adam Belot said Greg had been a highly respected and trusted leader during some of the Shire’s more recent disaster events.

“Greg has been an exceptional Local Disaster Coordinator and a strong role model for our organisation,” Mayor Belot said.

“His deep regional knowledge, calm leadership and ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations have been critical in keeping our community informed, prepared and safe.”

Since taking on the role, Greg has overseen approximately five disaster activations, participated in numerous disaster exercises, and contributed to countless Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) meetings, often outside normal working hours.

Mayor Belot said one of the defining moments of Greg’s tenure was leading alongside Council during major weather events, including Tropical Cyclone Alfred in March 2025 and the more recent Ex‑Tropical Cyclone Koji event.

“Through these events Greg has consistently met those challenges with sound judgement, resilience and integrity,” he said.

Mayor Belot also emphasised that Greg’s decision to step away from the role was not a reflection of his capability, but rather a response to the growing demands of the region.

“It’s important to be clear that Greg is not stepping aside because he isn’t the right person for the job, quite the opposite,” Mayor Belot said.

“As Livingstone Shire continues to grow, so too have the demands of his substantive role as Manager Planning and Development.

“His leadership is increasingly needed to support that growth and ensure our planning and development keeps pace with community needs.”

Council also acknowledged the contribution of all members of the Local Disaster Coordination Centre (LDCC) and the LDMG, who regularly step forward to support the community during times of emergency.

“Disaster response is a team effort, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributes their time, expertise and commitment, often under pressure and at short notice,” Mayor Belot said.

As Greg hands over the Local Disaster Coordinator role, Council has welcomed Amy Lane to the position.

“Amy brings extensive experience and capability, and we are confident she will continue the strong foundation that Greg has built,” Mayor Belot said.

“On behalf of Council and the community, I sincerely thank Greg for his exceptional service and leadership, and I look forward to seeing his continued contribution to the future of Livingstone Shire.”
