Cooee Bay Pool Opening – Setting the Record Straight
Published on 07 April 2026
Livingstone Shire Council is addressing misinformation circulating online regarding the upcoming Cooee Bay Pool opening, confirming that no formal invitations have been issued and no decisions have been made to exclude any individual from attending.
Mayor Adam Belot said recent claims made online by One Nation representative James Ashby suggesting Senator Pauline Hanson had been “banned” from the event were incorrect and had contributed to unacceptable behaviour directed at Councillors and their families.
“At no point have I, or Council, banned Senator Hanson from attending the Cooee Bay Pool opening,” Mayor Belot said.
“Unfortunately, misinformation has led to abusive behaviour toward Councillors and even their families, which is completely unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our community.”
Mayor Belot said Council has consistently acknowledged the contributions of those who supported funding for the project and remains committed to recognising all stakeholders appropriately.
“We acknowledge and appreciate the advocacy efforts of a number of representatives who supported funding for this project,” he said.
“As with any Council event, we will work through appropriate processes to determine invitations once details are finalised, ensuring we recognise contributors while meeting our obligations.”
Mayor Belot is looking forward to as many people as possible attending and would also like to extend an invitation to someone who has really stepped up.
“When my daughter was confronted in the carpark by a very irate individual on this matter, one gentleman stepped up to her aid, and I cannot thank him enough!
“I would welcome him to reach out to my office, so I can personally extend my gratitude.”
Chief Executive Officer Alastair Dawson said Council is required to operate within established funding agreement protocols that guide formal invitations and official roles at project openings.
“As the recipient of Commonwealth funding, Council must comply with standard guidelines that apply across local government nationally,” Mr Dawson said.
“These requirements are clear that formal speaking roles are limited to Council and the funding partner, and it is essential we adhere to these obligations to protect ongoing funding opportunities for our region.”
Mr Dawson said these requirements relate specifically to formal roles and do not preclude broader community participation.
“Once arrangements are confirmed, Council will consider a range of attendees for the opening in line with standard practice,” he said.
“While formal roles are governed by funding agreements, events such as this are ultimately about celebrating with our community and those connected to the project.”
Council has resolved to continue adhering to all legal and funding requirements while recognising that individuals may attend Council events in a non-official capacity.
Final details for the Cooee Bay Pool opening, including timing and formal arrangements, will be confirmed in consultation with the Commonwealth Government.
