Community invited to explore options for future Community Precinct

Livingstone Shire Council is inviting the community to learn more about options being considered for the future of Yeppoon’s Library, Community Centre and broader community services at a Community Information Session on Saturday, 12 September from 9am to 11am at the Yeppoon Showgrounds.

The session follows the commencement of Council’s Options Analysis, which is considering how Livingstone can plan for the facilities, services and infrastructure needed as the community continues to grow.

Mayor Adam Belot said the project was about much more than the future of a single building.

“This is about planning for the Livingstone of tomorrow and making sure we have the facilities, services and spaces needed to support a growing community for generations to come,” Mayor Belot said.

“Our Library, Community Centre and Strengthening Family Connections services are deeply valued, but demand for services continues to grow, more than 100 community groups use these facilities, and we need to address the limitations of ageing buildings and spaces that were never designed for the range of services we provide today.

“The Options Analysis allows us to look at the bigger picture, including future library and community facilities, civic and shared spaces, community services, housing opportunities and the future of our Showgrounds and Stevenson Park.

“While no final decision has been made, we are ready to share those options so our community can understand the opportunities and provide feedback.”

Mayor Belot said Council had also been engaging directly with current user groups ahead of the broader community release.

“More than 100 community groups use these facilities, so it was important to speak directly with the people who know them best,” he said.

“While there has understandably been passionate discussion about the future of the precinct, many of the people actually using these facilities every day are excited about the opportunity to expand services, improve accessibility and create spaces that better meet the diverse needs of our growing community.”

Secretary of Capricorn Coast University of the Third Age (U3A) and Community Centre user, Sylvia Ward, said their group welcomed the opportunity to be involved.

“We really appreciate how Council has brought us into these conversations over the past few months,” Sylvia said.

“These facilities are used by so many different groups, so it is important that those voices are part of the conversation.

“We see first-hand the pressure on the existing facilities, so the opportunity to consider what the future of the Community Precinct could look like is exciting.”

Cr Pat Eastwood said the Community Information Session was an opportunity for residents to better understand the options being considered and contribute to the conversation about the future.

“I encourage everyone who can attend to come along, ask questions, explore the options and share their views on what will deliver the best outcome for our whole community,” Cr Eastwood said.

The Community Information Session will provide an opportunity to:

• view the high-level concepts being considered;
• understand the Options Analysis and planning undertaken;
• speak directly with Council officers and project representatives;
• ask questions and provide feedback; and
• share ideas about how the history, character, memories and sense of belonging associated with the existing precinct could be reflected in a future Community Precinct.

Mayor Belot encouraged residents to take part.

“We know people will have questions and strong views, and we want to hear them,” he said.

“This is an opportunity to think bigger and plan for facilities and services that can support our community for decades to come, while respecting the history and connection people have with the places that have served our community for so long.

“I encourage everyone to come along, see the options being considered and help shape what comes next for our community.”
