Yeppoon Yarners

Next date: Wednesday, 07 October 2026 | 01:00 PM to 03:00 PM

• Provide a place where people interested in yarn arts and crafts can learn more and where experienced yarners can teach
• Build friendships with others enthusiastic about crafts
• Share crafted items with those who need them
• Establish intergenerational connections
• For those without local family, provide a safe and caring circle

HISTORY

Current participants don't know all of the details, but know the group has been operating since at least the early 2020s.

They used to meet and operate in the Yeppoon Library, but they were a bit too noisy for the environment and found that the Community Centre was a better location for their activity.

DETAILS

Yeppoon Yarners meet every week on Wednesdays from 1-3 pm in the Community Centre's Garage.

Jo has been coordinating the group for the last four years or so.

There is no cost to join the group, which welcomes any and all.

Each participant brings their own materials and tools.

Participants mostly knit or crochet, but other crafts are welcome.

Each month, the group donates most of their output -- including blankets, hats, and toys -- to local charities, such as the Rockhampton Base Hospital and nursing homes.

PEOPLE

Approximately 8-10 people attend each week. They have 15 on their list. Participants range in age from over 90 to the early twenties.

Two younger participants recently started attending. They had no experience with knitting or crochet, but were eager to learn. One of them is now selling some of her creations on the internet.

A Vietnamese lady attended the group for a while and learned to crochet. She has since relocated to the Gold Coast, where she is passing on these skills to a group of friends.

PARTICIPANT QUOTE

"I've crocheted for many years, but I didn't know how to read a pattern; the other ladies in this group taught me how."

Sharon, participant for one year
