U3A Music Appreciation

HISTORY

The Music Appreciation group has been a part of the local University of the Third Age (U3A) offering for at least fifteen years.

Several individuals have coordinated the group over the years, including Peter Hutton, who did it until recently and is still part of the group. Sylvia Ward is the current coordinator.

DETAILS

The group meets on the first Friday of the month from 10:00-12:15 in the Community Centre's Room B.

There is no cost to participants, other than the annual U3A membership fee of $20.

At each gathering, the group watches videos of different musical pieces, selected by one of the participants or by the coordinator.

Each gathering has a theme, such as: Welsh music, music from New Zealand, music for each of the four seasons, music with people's names in the titles, unusual and exceptional musicians. The format and choice of pieces is up to the participant that selects them.

PEOPLE

Around a dozen people usually attend, but it can be as many as 18 or 20.

They set up seats in a staggered arrangement so everyone is able to see the screen clearly without craning their necks.

• Several participants remarked that what they hear at the gatherings is music they wouldn't listen to on their own, but that they are so happy to be exposed to it here.
• Some participants mentioned the joy of preparing a playlist on a particular theme for the group. The research is so much fun!
