U3A Book Club

Next date: Monday, 19 October 2026 | 10:15 AM to 12:00 PM

• Encourage people to read a broader range of books
• Promote a deeper appreciation and understanding of a wide swathe of literature
• Permit increased enjoyment of books through sharing different perspectives
• Enjoy discussing books with other avid readers

HISTORY

The group has been operating since 2012 or so.

Julia has been coordinating the group since mid-2026. Carol coordinated for nine years until 2026, and Helen did it before that and was probably the group's creator and its first coordinator.

Over the years, the group has read more than 150 books together. Since late 2022, they have posted a brief review and rating of each book on the Capricorn Coast U3A group's website.

DETAILS

The club meets on the third Monday of each month from 10:15 to Noon in the Community Centre's Room C. The only cost is the annual membership fee for University of the Third Age (U3A).

The group's books come from the State Library of Queensland's (SLQ) Book Club collection of nearly 400 titles. Sets of ten copies of the chosen books are delivered via the Yeppoon Library.

For four of the months in 2026, the group will read selected titles from an ABC-compiled list of the Best Books of the 21st Century, for some variety from the SLQ titles. Members will need to get their own copies.

PEOPLE

Approximately 10-12 people attend the gatherings each month. SLQ provides ten copies of each book, so some participants share copies.

The group has 16 members on its mailing list, but not all of them come every month.

All but one of the current participants are women. All are members of U3A, which caters to retired people 50 and older.

PARTICIPANT QUOTE

"Come if you enjoy reading! It's a great value, because the books come from the State Library for free."

Valda, participant for five years
