PURPOSE

  • Provide an opportunity for both amateur and experienced artists to explore and enhance their skills in any artistic media
  • Establish a supportive environment and a chance to socialise with other artists
  • Collaboratively foster a safe space away from distractions where participants can focus on their art
  • Create works of art through which participants can see their progress in learning and expressing their artistic skills

HISTORY

None of the current participants joined the group before 2021, but it had been in existence before that. Originally, the leader ran the group like a school art class. Each meeting had a structure and a theme, such as studying particular art techniques or subjects (e.g. trees and their leaves), and it was focused on the use of acrylic paints. The group now welcomes all visual arts and there is no specific structure.

DETAILS

The group is open to any U3A members that would like to explore any aspects of the visual arts. There is no cost to join the group, but participants provide their own materials. The group meets twice per month in the Community Centre Garage, where each participant can spread out on their own table. Sessions are on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.

PEOPLE

6-10 individuals attend the meetings each fortnight; there are 14 on the list. The group includes both women and men, from age 50 (U3A's minimum age) on up. One 92-year-old loves painting pictures of birds. Participants have a wide range of skills in a variety of media, including drawing, acrylic paints, water colours, pastels, and more. They are happy to share their learnings with others when asked.

PARTICIPANT QUOTE

"It's a bit of 'into the unknown'. Initially, you think, how do people do that? Then you get driven to find out."

Alan, participant for 2 months

MORE

  • Ray and Karen have been coordinating the group since early 2024, and Annette coordinated it for 15-18 months before that. There's no formal process for who takes on a leadership role, just whoever is willing to help the group keep going.
  • The group displays selected artwork at the U3A Annual General Meeting each year, and photos of some of the participants' art are on the group's website.
  • The group has a section of the Yeppoon U3A website: https://sites.google.com/site/capcoastu3a/home/art.
