HISTORY

The group originally begin in Rockhampton in 2002. They received a grant to conduct a workshop in late 2005, which culminated in their first performance at the Yeppoon Town Hall.

Over the years, the group has worked closely with the Multicultural Groups in Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

Nicholai and Tony have shared leadership of the group since the beginning. Tony leads the dancing most of the time now, although Nicholai still gives input.

DETAILS

Capricornia Dance Exchange comes together on the first Saturday of each month in the Community Centre's Rooms A&B. The group also meets each Thursday evening in Rockhampton. There is no fixed cost to participate, although contributions are welcomed.

All dances are taught with very clear instructions and demonstration. Dancing is accompanied by a group of musicians on accordian, violin, and ukulele.

PEOPLE

Anywhere from 6-16 people attend, depending on the week. There are several regulars, but new people come almost every time.

The regulars are all over 60, but it is common for younger people to join the dancing any given month. When the group previously ran a program in Mt Morgan, they had a number of children join them, and would love to have some join them in Yeppoon.

PARTICIPANT QUOTE

"Tony is excellent at teaching the dances. Once or twice he has even worn different coloured socks on each foot just to make it easier for us to learn new steps!"

Claire, participant for a few years
