CCHA Mahjong

HISTORY

Thegroup began in 2002, initially led by Yvonne Motton. It has been running as a regular weekly activity every since. Mimi, one of the founding members, still plays and mentors new players.

The group used to play in the Community Centre's Garage, and had to carry their game equipment and tables from a nearby shed. Some years ago, they moved to the nicer Rooms A&B, but then they had to carry their equipment up the stairs from the shed each week. Now everything they need is stored in the room, so they are very happy!

DETAILS

The activity is organised by Capricorn Coast Healthy Ageing (CCHA). Participants must join CCHA, which charges the very low membership fee of $5 per year, and there is also a $1 per week charge to play.

The group meets in Rooms A&B each Monday from 1-4 pm. They set out four or five tables, depending on how many people attend.

Play is according to the Western Style. Sometimes the players participate in regional competitions.

PEOPLE

There are 22 people on the group's mailing list. Most weeks 16-20 people attend. They would welcome men (and have had some in the past), but the group is currently all women.

Each week, players are randomly assigned to one of the tables of four so they can talk to and play with different people each time.

Veteran players happily assist learners with the rules, procedures, and strategies for good play.

• Beth is the current coordinator of the group and has been doing it since 2008.
• The group plays Western Style Mahjong that requires playing different hands with assigned point values of Half Limit (500 points), Limit (1000 points), Middle Limit (1500 points), and Double Limit (2000 points).
