Livingstone Shire Council and the Capricorn Coast community are preparing to celebrate the commencement of NAIDOC Week 2026 with an event being held this Friday 3 July, recognising the enduring history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year’s NAIDOC Week holds special significance as it marks 50 years of honouring and elevating First Nations voices, culture and resilience under the national theme, “50 Years of Deadly”, celebrating the strength, survival and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Mayor Adam Belot said NAIDOC Week is a time for reflection, recognition and unity.

“NAIDOC Week is one of the most important occasions on our community calendar. It is a time to honour the world’s oldest continuing cultures, acknowledge the resilience and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and celebrate the progress we continue to make together,” Mayor Belot said.

Communities Portfolio Co-lead and Darumbal representative Councillor Lance Warcon said NAIDOC Week is a significant time for First Nations people to honour culture, strengthen connection and celebrate the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

“NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for our people to come together, share our stories, celebrate our culture and pass knowledge on to the next generation,” Cr Warcon said.

“Here on Darumbal Country, we’re proud to welcome the wider community to walk alongside us, learn from our culture and celebrate together as we honour 50 Years of Deadly.”

The Capricorn Coast Indigenous Mob will lead this year’s local celebrations at the Yeppoon Foreshore, featuring a community walk, smoking ceremony, traditional dancing, an official ceremony, live entertainment, market stalls and family-friendly activities.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to join the celebrations, connect with community and be part of recognising 50 Years of Deadly.
