Capricorn Coast Memorial Gardens to be renamed in Honour of Tom Wyatt

Livingstone Shire Council has today resolved to honour the extraordinary legacy of esteemed horticulturalist, community leader and former local councillor Tom Wyatt by renaming the Capricorn Coast Memorial Gardens to the ‘Capricorn Coast Tom Wyatt Memorial Gardens’.
Tom Wyatt (1946–2025) was a widely respected Australian horticulturalist whose life’s work greatly enriched the natural and cultural landscapes of Central Queensland and beyond.
His four-decade career included serving as curator and Director of Parks and Gardens, designing iconic public spaces, and sharing his deep knowledge and passion with thousands of Queenslanders.
Mayor Adam Belot said Council’s decision to rename the Capricorn Coast Memorial Gardens was a fitting tribute to a man whose legacy is deeply woven into the region’s landscape and community.
“Tom’s vision for greener, more liveable communities helped shape not only the places we enjoy today, but also the way we think about public spaces and environmental stewardship,” Mayor Belot said.
“Renaming the Capricorn Coast Memorial Gardens in his honour ensures Tom’s contribution is permanently recognised in a place that reflects his life’s work, values and passion for horticulture.”
Mayor Belot said Mr Wyatt’s influence extended well beyond gardens and parks.
“Tom was a trusted voice to generations of Queenslanders through his 40 years hosting ABC’s Gardening Talkback, where he shared practical advice, warmth and a genuine love of gardening,” he said.
“He was also a dedicated public servant, having served as a councillor with both Rockhampton and Livingstone councils, where he championed sustainable development and community-focused outcomes.”
Mayor Belot highlighted Tom Wyatt’s unique approach to the design of the memorial gardens.
“Tom believed memorial gardens should be more than just solemn sites,” he said.
“He advocated for pleasant, welcoming spaces where families could enjoy picnics, children could run and play, and everyone could experience a connection to nature.
“His philosophy was always community-focused, creating vibrant, accessible gardens that brought people together.
“The Capricorn Coast Tom Wyatt Memorial Gardens will stand as a lasting reminder of his contribution and will continue to inspire residents and visitors for generations to come.”
Mayor Belot said Council looked forward to commemorating the renaming with the community.
“At a date to be determined in the New Year, we will invite Tom’s family, friends and the broader community to join us at the official unveiling to celebrate a life dedicated to growing places, people and pride in our region,” he said.
