The Capricorn Coast turned on a spectacular afternoon yesterday as locals of all ages filled the Yeppoon Foreshore beside the Yeppoon Lagoon to celebrate rugby league star Harry Grant and witness his presentation of the Honorary Key to the Shire.

The event opened with a Welcome to Country by Councillor Lance Warcon, followed by remarks from Councillor Wade Rothery, who reflected on Harry’s contribution to rugby league and its impact on regional communities.

Yeppoon’s own former Brisbane Bronco Scott Minto then hosted a warm and engaging interview and Q&A, much to the crowd’s enjoyment and entertainment.

Harry Grant said he was deeply appreciative of the community that shaped him, and admitted he was surprised when he learned he would be receiving the key.

“When I first heard about the key, I honestly wasn’t sure what to think,  I was a bit taken aback,” Harry said.

“It’s not something you ever expect. But I’m extremely humbled by it, and I want to thank AB (Mayor Adam Belot) for giving me the chance to come home, stand in front of the community that raised me, and show my gratitude.”

Harry reflected on the role of community in his journey.

“This community is where everything started for me. The coaches, volunteers, families, they’re the backbone of junior footy, and I wouldn’t be here without them.”

He paid special tribute to his parents and the values they instilled.

“Dad was always front and centre supporting us all the way, and Mum organised teams, carnivals, everything on paper, no laptops or spreadsheets.”

“Their work ethic and attitude are what I try to carry into my role as captain at Melbourne Storm.”

Harry said seeing so many young Seagulls players and kids in the audience was a real highlight.

“To the kids out there, keep turning up, keep listening to your coaches, and enjoy every minute. This community will always back you.”

Mayor Adam Belot said the strong turnout reflected the region’s pride in Harry and his achievements.

“It was a fantastic afternoon that really showcased the spirit of the Livingstone Shire. Harry’s humility and commitment to community make him an outstanding role model.”
