Improved Accessibility at Emu Park Pool Thanks to Community Feedback

Livingstone Shire Council is pleased to announce the installation of a new accessibility ladder at Emu Park’s Don Ireland Swimming Complex, making it easier and safer for elderly and mobility-impaired swimmers to enter and exit the water.
Following feedback from local residents, particularly older patrons and those recovering from surgery, Council investigated solutions to improve access on the existing ramp, which had a steep drop that made it difficult for some swimmers to safely step out of the pool.
After extensive research, Council sourced a custom-made ladder designed to fit into existing inserts in the concrete ramp. This means it could be installed without the need to drain the pool or undertake major infrastructure works—an innovative solution for an older facility.
Recreation and Culture Portfolio Co-Lead, Councillor Andrea Friend, said the new ladder was installed recently and has already received positive feedback from users, who report it has made entering and exiting the pool significantly easier.
“Council is pleased that it was able to find a practical solution that works with the existing infrastructure, and I thank the community for raising the issue with us,” Cr Friend said.
“The ladder is also removable to ensure flexibility during events and competitions when lane space is required.”
Councillor Rhodes Watson, who has been actively involved in the project, said the upgrade reflects Council’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
“We listened to our community, and we acted,” Cr Watson said.
“Something as simple as getting in and out of the pool should be safe and accessible for everyone—especially our older residents who rely on swimming for their health and wellbeing.
“Council thanks the local residents who brought this matter to our attention and encourages the community to continue sharing feedback to help improve facilities across the Shire.”
