Livingstone residents encouraged to connect with community this Seniors Month!

Back
Connecting with one another has never been more important and for the first time Livingstone Shire will be celebrating Queensland Seniors Month, 1- 31 October, with the theme Social Connections.

During the month people of all ages, cultures, and abilities will be able connect and celebrate the important and essential roles older people play in our communities.

In short, it’s going to be a connect fest!

Council has teamed up with a number of local groups and organisations to host over 40 events across the Shire, with a wide variety of activities on offer, including outdoor recreational activities, fashion, music, health and wellness and education.

Beginning on the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, the month will end on National Grandparents Day, 31 October.

An official launch for Livingstone Shire’s Seniors Month will be held in conjunction with The Oak Tree Expo on 8 October at Yeppoon Town Hall, where a number of information stalls and agencies will be on display.

Councillor Glenda Mather, said Seniors Week aims to provide opportunities for senior members of the community to enjoy new experiences while learning about local services and support that is available.

“These events and activities, as well as ‘Come-and-Try’ days are planned to offer the opportunity for our senior residents to make new friends and connections within their community that they might not have experienced otherwise,” Cr Mather said.

“One of the new and exciting additions to the event calendar this year is a Classics Ride, featuring classic cars and motorbikes. The ride will begin in Yeppoon and finish in Emu Park with a pub lunch on Saturday, 23 October.”

Councillor Pat Eastwood said Council has had wonderful feedback from residents who have participated in previous years which has helped us create a diverse programme this year.

“The Shire’s seniors are vital to the fabric of the community, and offer so much wisdom and knowledge, and it’s important to celebrate their many successes and the contributions they have made to making this region a wonderful place to live,” Cr Eastwood said.

“Council would like to sincerely thank all of the agencies, service providers, community groups and organisations who have helped to make this fantastic variety of events possible, and we look forward to welcoming our local seniors to each of the 43 activities and events.”

Seniors will be able to find all of the relevant booking information on the calendar of events printout, which is available from all Council libraries and Customer Support Centres.

Seniors Month aims to:
• improve community attitudes towards older people and ageing.
• facilitate community participation and activity by older people, including those from Indigenous and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
• enhance community connections and inter-generational relationships.
• Whether it be attending a virtual dance or cooking class, a morning tea or concert, sharing a meal, experience, passion, or having a chat with a neighbour over the fence – we simply feel good when we connect.
