Livingstone
Shire can embrace growth and development with confidence
now that the State Government has endorsed its new
planning scheme.
Planning Minister Desley Boyle said, "this planning
scheme is a
blueprint for balanced growth in Livingstone Shire and the
Council and
residents should feel proud for reaching this significant
milestone".
"I'm very impressed by the way Livingstone Shire
residents got involved
in the planning process and had their say about their
future."
Member for Keppel Paul Hoolihan said the scheme
endeavoured to protect
the Capricorn coastline and hopefully, will reduce the
visual impact of
taller buildings.
"Of course, any Plan approved will still require
sensible application to
allow for the benefits to be enjoyed by all
residents."
"Livingstone Shire residents should receive the
benefits of growth and
development that should not unduly impact on the Shire's
unique
identity," Mr Hoolihan said.
"Livingstone's planning scheme includes provisions
which are designed to
limit excessive vegetation clearing and should contribute
to the control
of erosion and scarring.
"I'm pleased that the scheme will have
the capacity to provide
opportunities for residents to build houses that can take
advantage of
the Shire's fantastic ocean views.
"An important highlight of the planning scheme was
the protection of
good quality agricultural land from subdivision.
"Good farming land is an important economic driver
for Livingstone Shire
with grazing, pineapple and coffee production forming
important elements
of the Shire's industry," he said.
"It is positive to see the Shire's new planning
scheme supports these
industries through practical provisions."
The Livingstone Shire Council is expected to have its
scheme formally
adopted and in force within the next few weeks.
"With this new planning scheme, the council will be
able to guide growth
and change in their Shire well into the next decade,"
Ms Boyle said.
