Major milestone for Shire as Scenic Highway at Statue Bay reopens to the community tomorrow

One of the most challenging engineering projects in the history of Livingstone Shire has come to completion this week, marking a major milestone for the local community as the Scenic Highway at Statue Bay will reopen to traffic from tomorrow afternoon.

Mayor Bill Ludwig said the project has been an extensive and complex operation to ensure long-term stability at the site to withstand extreme weather events in future.

“I must commend the continued patience of residents and motorists during this massive infrastructure rebuilding project; it has been greatly appreciated and Council is extremely pleased to have the Scenic Highway now re-opening to traffic,” Cr Ludwig said.

“This is a momentous day for the local community and the region, in our long-term recovery from the devastating impact of Cyclone Marcia in 2015.

“Council would also like to once again acknowledge the efforts of its key staff, subcontractors and suppliers in achieving the construction program. It was imperative for Council to complete eligible works by 30 June to meet the requirements of the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), and expectations were exceeded in that regard despite the added challenges of significant wet weather events.

“Council completed the remaining construction works this week, following the decision for Council to undertake and oversee completion of the project from March this year.

“The most recent progress has included final construction of both the upslope and downslope works, the completion of the block revetment wall and stabilised road embankment including the road pavement, along with installation of all of the soil nails and shotcrete on the cliff face.

“The road has had its final seal coat applied this week while the concrete footpath, balustrade fencing, road line-marking, guardrail and concrete-lined drain were also completed,” Cr Ludwig said.

Eligible works are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments under the NDRRA.

The latest drone footage of the construction works has been uploaded to Council’s website and can be found at the following link: http://www.livingstone.qld.gov.au/1190/Statue-Bay
